Grading Plan Checks and Permitting

Effective January 1, 2026, the Department of Engineering will assume responsibility for grading plan checks and permitting.  Submissions may be made through the City’s online permitting portal beginning January 2, 2026.

The Department of Engineering is responsible for designing and managing the City’s public infrastructure. This involves the development of public streets which include roadways, curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.

Infrastructure improvements are needed to protect the health, safety, and general welfare of the citizens, visitors, and the business community within the City of Fontana.

Responsibilities:

  • Implementation of the City's Capital Improvement Program 
  • Design and project management of City infrastructure projects
  • Management of the City’s signal operation and maintenance program
  • Land development 
  • Inspection of improvements within the public street right-of-way
  • Transportation and interchange development

Temporary Plan Check Timelines


Due to current staff shortages, we have temporarily adjusted our plan check turnaround times as follows:

1st Check: 6 weeks

2nd Check: 5 weeks

3rd Check: 4 weeks

4th Check and beyond: 3 weeks

Updates for Landscape

As of August 12, 2024, landscape plan checks, permits, and inspections will be under the Planning Department.  Applicants can submit through the Build Fontana portal under Planning.
